LOCATION | The St. Regis is about halfway between Chapultepec Park and the iconic Angel of Independence monument along the Paseo de la Reforma, right behind a striking fountain with a sculpture of Diana, the Roman goddess of the hunt.

ROOMS | Even the smallest room here is a sprawling 538 square feet. The ample space leaves plenty of room for the king-sized bed as well as a sectional sofa and a desk. Our favourite aspect of the accommodation, however, is not the size but the floor-to-ceiling windows, which offer a bird’s-eye view of the city.

FACILITIES | The rooms aren’t the only part of the St. Regis where you can take in the cityscape. Both the gym and the indoor pool also feature large glass panels through which the city twinkles magically at night.

Best Luxury Hotels In La Condesa, Mexico City

We’re just going to come right out and say it: La Condesa is our favourite part of town. Found just south of Chapultepec, it’s arguably the trendiest place in CDMX, filled with delightful neighbourhood cafes, delectable restaurants, boutique hotels and boho bars where you can relax after a busy day of exploring the city’s major attractions. 

#4 Casa 9 – Best For An Upscale B&B.

Moving away from the large Mexico City luxury hotels, Casa 9 has just four rooms available, all lovingly designed according to an idiosyncratic aesthetic. 

LOCATION | For greenery, Casa 9 is just a short walk from both the Parque Espana and the Bosque de Chapultepec. The nearest metro line is about 10 minutes away when you want to see other parts of the city, but you don’t need to go far to enjoy the buzzy selection of international restaurants dotted about Condesa.

ROOMS | Occupying a former family mansion, there isn’t as much space in the rooms as we’ve found elsewhere, but thanks to a lean approach to furnishings, it doesn’t feel cramped. That’s greatly helped by the fact that each lodging has French windows that lead onto an outdoor patio.

FACILITIES | As part of the upmarket B&B concept, Casa 9 has an excellent breakfast as part of the room rate, as well as complimentary coffee and water available in the communal areas throughout the day. While there isn’t a restaurant on-site, there is a charming communal lounge where you can take advantage of an honour bar.

#5 Octavia Casa – Best For Minimalist Design.

LOCATION | This seven-room boutique is hidden down a quiet side street of La Condesa that’s within easy reach of more bustling areas. It’s a great location for people who want to enjoy the local nightlife but return to a room that’s not disturbed by outside noise at the end of the day.

ROOMS | Octavia Casa contains four doubles, two studios, and a suite, all draped in Octavia’s high-end home fabrics. Everything is soothingly designed in muted colours, complemented by tasteful pieces of furniture. 

FACILITIES | While the facilities here are pretty limited, there is a roof terrace that gets plenty of sun. It’s also possible to order a continental breakfast for an additional fee.

LOCATION | The hotel is right in the middle of Condesa, a short walk from two metro stations and a slightly longer 20-minute walk from Chapultepec Park.

ROOMS | CASA LUCIANA has a beautiful way with wood, which features prominently in the room design. Each of the eight lodgings comes with 600-thread-count organic cotton sheets and premium hypoallergenic pillows to ensure a great night’s sleep. 

While the ambiently lit showers in the standard rooms are perfectly nice, it’s the spa baths in the deluxe rooms that are a real treat.

Condesa’s slightly edgier neighbour, Roma, has a great vibe to it. Art galleries, Roma’s excellent hotels and casual eateries are dotted throughout its streets, mixed in with a bunch of small museums dedicated to everything from ergonomic design to the history of chocolate manufacture. It’s one big, exciting melting pot of local life.

#8 La Valise Mexico City – Best For Small Luxury Hotels In Mexico.

La Valise is a boutique luxury hotel chain that operates three distinctive properties around Mexico, each one a stunner. The CDMX location boasts just three suites that are a masterclass in guest seduction.

LOCATION | There’s plenty to keep you busy in the surrounding area, including upscale food hall Mercado Roma, design museum MODO, and trendy cocktail bars like Licoreria Limantour.

ROOMS | The trio of individually designed suites each has its own theme. La Luna is centred on its mobile moon sculpture, while El Patio contains a calming internal courtyard. Our favourite, however, is the top-floor La Terrazza, which features a king-sized bed that can slide outside onto the sizable terrace, allowing you to sleep underneath starlight.

FACILITIES | Given that there are just three rooms at La Valise, it’s hardly surprising that there isn’t much in the way of on-site amenities. Breakfast is served in your room, but otherwise, there are plenty of restaurants in the vicinity that you’ll want to sample for lunch and dinner.

#9 Sofitel Mexico City Reforma – One Of The Best Luxury Resorts In Mexico City For Self-Indulgence.

The Sofitel is the place to go for a bit of pampering. The hotel boasts not just one of the most attractive spa swimming pools of all the 5-star hotels in Mexico City but also one of the highest rooftop bars in the capital.

LOCATION | Nestled on a part of Paseo de la Reforma that includes fancy offices, upmarket shopping malls, and the US Embassy, the Sofitel is just across from the funky Zona Rosa neighbourhood, with the metro station downstairs supplying easy access to the rest of the city. 

ROOMS | The Sofitel’s rooms feel slightly smaller than some of the other five-star international hotel brands in town offer, but they still pack in plenty of panache, from the textured walls to the window banquette, which provides a perfect perch to gaze out through the floor-to-ceiling windows at the city below.

FACILITIES | There are five different F&B options within the hotel, including the fine-dining Bajel, the Mediterranean-Mexican fare of Balta, and our personal favourite, Cityzen, a rooftop bar that serves up excellent cocktails and superb views – make sure you book your table in advance on weekends.

#10 Brick Hotel Mexico City – Best Choice For Trendy Travellers.

A member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World, Brick Hotel is the kind of trendy spot that feels like it was designed for well-to-do 30-somethings with an eye for fashion.

LOCATION | Just south of the Plaza Rio de Janeiro with its replica of Michelangelo’s David, the building is surrounded by art galleries and restaurants. Don’t miss out on sampling the churros from the Churreria El Moro chain, which has a branch less than 10 minutes from the hotel.

ROOMS | Standard rooms here are compact but well furnished in smart greys and whites, complete with high-definition TVs and Nespresso coffee machines. Do yourself a favour and upgrade to one of the suites, which comes with a balcony, a living area, and a bathtub. 

FACILITIES | In summer, we recommend enjoying an afternoon cocktail on the pretty terrace, which is dotted with potted plants and stylish seating. There’s also a restaurant and spa, both exquisitely modern with well-trained staff.

#11 Colima 71 – One Of The Best Luxury Hotels In Mexico City For Artsy Decor.

Found inside a heavily renovated building on a charming neighbourhood street in Roma Norte, Colima 71 has incorporated sculptural, photographic, and architectural art into its decor to provide a one-of-a-kind homage to modern Mexican creativity.

LOCATION | To the west lies the MODO museum, while to the northeast is the Arena Mexico, where luchadores ply their trade. A couple of metro stations are also within the vicinity.

ROOMS | A total of 16 studios are found within the Colima 71 block. All of them come with a fully equipped kitchen and a king-sized bed. We’re particularly enamoured with the complimentary toiletries made from honey in the bathroom, as well as the hand-woven hammocks that come with the balconied accommodation options.

FACILITIES | Though refreshments don’t go beyond a coffee counter and an honesty bar, there are several little nooks where you can hang out and chill for a spell, including the library, the courtyard, and the nifty working booths.

Best Luxury Hotels In Polanco, Mexico City

Some of the finest 5 star luxury hotels in Mexico City are located in Polanco, which is one of the capital’s most affluent neighbourhoods. Expect to pay top dollar for the pleasure of residing amidst the crème de la crème of Mexican society, within walking distance of CDMX’s finest F&B establishments.

#12 JW Marriott Hotel Mexico City Polanco – One Of The Best Located 5 Star Hotels Mexico City.

Overlooking Bosque de Chapultepec, the JW Marriott has one of the nicest outdoor pools in CDMX. The views from the rooms are good enough to rival any of its competitors.

LOCATION | The Auditorio performing arts venue and its associated metro station are a short walk away, as is the National Museum of Anthropology, which contains an excellent collection of Mesoamerican artefacts. CDMX’s most fashionable shopping street, Presidente Masaryk Avenue, is also nearby.

ROOMS | The JW Marriott brand rarely does things by halves, and this location is no different, offering 314 rooms, all with floor-to-ceiling windows that provide views of the city. The décor is light and bright, creating a breezily stylish space to relax.

FACILITIES | We’ve already mentioned that we are fans of the temperature-controlled rooftop pool, but the all-day Xanat Mexican restaurant is also a highlight, particularly if you can get a spot on the patio. 

#13 Casa Polanco Hotel Boutique – One Of The Best Luxury Hotels In Mexico City For Connoisseurs Of The High Life. 

Casa Polanco epitomises the kind of high-fashion mien that the Polanco neighbourhood is all about. While the building dates to the 1940s, everything has been flawlessly updated for the contemporary connoisseur.

LOCATION | The building faces the oh-so-refined Parque Lincoln, while the Auditorio, Chapultepec Park, and fine-dining hotspots Pujol and Quintonil are within walking distance.

ROOMS | The bright white rooms feature marble bathrooms, sophisticated furniture, sound-proof double-glazed windows, and a smattering of tastefully selected artworks. Opt for one of the premier rooms for a fabulous balcony view.

FACILITIES | For a boutique hotel, Casa Polanco is noticeably well-equipped. The facilities include a spa, a gym, and a library, as well as a glorious rooftop that overlooks the surrounding greenery. 

We really appreciate the nice little extra touch of offering bicycles so that you can explore the vast Bosque de Chapultepec on two wheels. There’s even a complimentary breakfast to fuel you up for the ride! 

#14 Pug Seal Polanco Allan Poe – Best For Bold Design.

Pug Seal has three different hotels within CDMX, but the Allan Poe is probably our favourite. The bold design of various local creatives has created a truly unique, Instagram-worthy proposition that balances comfort with class.

LOCATION | Further to the north of Polanco compared to the other hotels we’ve featured in this post, the hotel is a 20-minute walk to the excellent Soumaya Museum, a building dedicated to art and culture that is an artwork in its own right. Polanco metro station is also a short stroll away.

ROOMS | The ceramic moulds of stag and wolf heads affixed above the beds in some of the rooms pretty much sums up the quirky, fearless approach to décor at the Pug Seal Allan Poe, whether that’s manifested in brightly painted walls, striking patterned wallpaper, or unique light fixtures.

FACILITIES | Like the Casa Polanco, Pug Seal Allan Poe supplies bicycles free of charge (there’s also free private parking if you’ve rented a car). While there isn’t an all-day restaurant, the hotel does serve a complimentary breakfast. 

On sunnier days, guests without their own private balconies can catch some rays in the modest garden, watched over by a mural of the Mesoamerican deity Quetzalcoatl.

#15 The Alest Hotel – From Paris With Love.

There’s something distinctly French about the Alest, from the striking façade right through to the brasserie, which has been decorated in a manner that’s right out of the Parisian playbook.

LOCATION | Found along the edge of the Parque Lincoln, Polanco’s most glamorous restaurants and chichi boutiques fill the surrounding streets, so you can mix and mingle with the city’s glitterati

ROOMS | A monochromatic colour palette pervades the rooms at the Alest, which has some of the softest beds we’ve come across in CDMX. The sharply observed design details are unintrusive but tasteful.

FACILITIES | The ground-floor brasserie and bar may look French, but the menu is predominantly Mexican, providing plenty of authentic dishes for guests to devour. While there isn’t a spa, in-room massages can be arranged through the concierge.

Best Hotels In Downtown Mexico City

Although the downtown part of CDMX isn’t the nicest part of town to stay in, it is a convenient option for first-time visitors. Many of the must-see attractions are in this area, plus there are good public transport routes to the rest of the city. You will also find a great selection of downtown accommodation, including luxury picks.

#16 Círculo Mexicano – Best Hotel For Downtown Panoramas.

Situated just steps from the Zocalo, the Circulo Mexicano has some fantastic views from its rooftop terrace, which boasts a plunge pool, a sauna, and a hot tub.

LOCATION | Mexico’s largest cathedral is just across the road, while the Aztecan Templo Mayor ruins and the National Palace are just a couple of minutes on foot. To the west, the fabulous art nouveau Palacio de Bellas Artes is 15 minutes’ walk.

ROOMS | A total of 25 rooms are available within the mansion house, which dates to the 19th century. A crisp, clean minimalism runs through the décor, creating a feeling of space in what are ultimately compact rooms of around 215 to 323 square feet (the suites are slightly larger).

FACILITIES | The highlight here is obviously the rooftop with its various amenities and great views, but there’s also a ground-floor restaurant and café where you can enjoy meals throughout the day.

#17 Umbral, Curio Collection By Hilton – Best Luxury Hotel Mexico City For Rooftop Dinner In Downtown.

The Umbral’s pink stone façade is an excellent example of the attractive buildings that are part of the downtown area’s appeal. Like the Circulo Mexicano, it also has a splendid sundeck.

LOCATION | The Zocalo, with its various attractions, is a short walk away. Numerous shops and department stores in the vicinity offer knickknacks that make for decent mementoes.

ROOMS | Accommodation here is smartly modern, if a little dark, since many of the rooms don’t have much natural light. These are lodgings for getting a comfortable sleep rather than relaxing during the day.

FACILITIES | The rooftop boasts a modest pool accompanied by loungers, but the best views, in our opinion, are to be had from the restaurant terrace. The building also contains a business centre, a gym, and a small bar.

#18 Antiguo Molino de San Jerónimo – Best Hotel For Historical Flavour.

We get very strong old-school Mexican vibes from the Antiguo Molino de San Jerónimo, which occupies a colonial-era building that was formerly a mill. It’s now been splendidly renovated into a cosy modern hotel that still exudes a historical ambience.

LOCATION | Right next to the Isabel la Catolica metro station, it’s about a 15-minute walk to both the Zocalo and the Palacio de Bellas Artes.

ROOMS | Five different suites are available at the Antiguo Molino de San Jerónimo, all of them blending modern comforts with a traditional approach to furnishings that make it feel like you’re living in the Mexico of days gone by. The standard suites contain a bedroom, a bathroom, a living room, and a dining area, while the larger options tack on a kitchenette.

FACILITIES | The best place in the hotel is probably the wooden-decked terrace, which looks out over the city. Having said that, the indoor communal areas are strikingly decorated in an evocative period style. Breakfast is included in the room rate, and there’s a small bar area where you can grab a drink.

#19 Hilton Mexico City – One Of The Best-Equipped Luxury Hotels In Mexico City.

The Hilton offers a diverse range of dining options, as well as a small rooftop garden that overlooks the Palacio de Bellas Artes.

LOCATION | The hotel is situated right beside the Alameda Central Park, which you can cross to reach the Palacio de Bellas Artes. The Zocalo is about 25 minutes’ walk or a 15-minute ride on the metro.

How many days should I stay in Mexico City?

We would recommend at least three full days based in Mexico City. It will feel like a bit of a rush, but that will give you just enough time to see the city’s main sights, as well as head a bit further out of town to the floating gardens of Xochimilco and the ancient ruins of Teotihuacan.

What is the best month to visit Mexico City?

Between March and May is when Mexico City experiences the best weather, after the winter but before the rainy season. However, if you want to visit during one of the less crowded, cheaper times of year, June can be a good alternative option – just bear in mind that there’s usually a brief but savage daily shower.
